The Philippines is one of the most dynamic economies in the Asia Pacific region. Businesses are booming, and consumer demand is high, thanks to a vibrant labor market with notable performance in the services sector supported by remittances from Filipinos overseas. However, the IMF slashed its growth forecast for the Philippines from 6.9% to 5.4% in 2021. The government’s expansionary fiscal program and accommodative monetary policy should put the economy on a firm recovery path, despite facing one of Asia’s worst COVID-19 outbreaks. It is predicted that the economy will take a step up in 2021-22, with less fear and more confidence among consumers and business owners alike. In 2019, the Philippines was ranked #95 in the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business index (Sources: Asian Development Bank, Reuters, World Bank).
