A positive economic turnaround of 6.5% is projected for Curaçao in 2021, says CBCS

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic took a massive toll on the economy of the monetary union of Curaçao and Sint Maarten. This was due to their economic dependency on tourism, which fell by more than 50% after the outbreak in 2020. Despite the substantial response measures financed by The Netherlands, real GDP contracted by an unprecedented 20.2% in Curaçao. Curaçao and Sint Maarten are struggling with a high rate of inflation, which erodes purchasing power. Average consumer prices increased by an estimated 2.7% in Curaçao. The outlook remains challenging, but agreements with the Netherlands should significantly help and boost overall economic growth. The projected growth of 6.5% in 2021 would come from an increase in net foreign demand mitigated by a decrease in domestic demand. (Sources: CBCS, IMF, and Curaçao Chronicle).
